Like Between Two Worlds
A Study in Framing
In creating this narrative project I sought to tell Sandra's story through her own words and her own voice. In developing the three narrative multi-media pieces that make up the heart of this story I became increasingly aware of how my editing choices impacted the story I told and how it might be interepreted. As a writer and a reseracher, the simple process of editing - choosing what to include - introduces a new layer of analysis into the story, my voice is present, even if not audibly, in the selection, cultivation and final presentation of the narrative.
I became particularly aware of these choices as I began making decisions about the multi-media clips: Do I run them with pictures or without pictures, with underlying musical tracks or just with a simple focus on Sandra's voice? Each choice, each style had a different impact, each elicits a slightly different response. I found that music added a powerful and compelling underlayer, but also not so subtely directed the listeners emotions. Simple audio allowed one to focus on the cadence of Sandra's voice and on her story, but the photographs add layers of meaning and helped to set the scene.
Ultimately I made a choice, but wanting to explore the different impacts of sounds and images I invite you to explore these four pieces below. They are the same small piece of Sandra's story, but each treated slightly differently. Which resonates with you? Why?
